How do you pick outfits for your family session? I get this question about once a week. And here’s my best advice: Blend, don’t match. Pick colors that work well together, that complement each other. You don’t have to be matchy-matchy. The whole family doesn’t need to show up wearing white.
I recommend button-down shirts for the guys and a comfortable blouse or dress for the ladies. Try to stay away from really busy patterns and shirts with logos. Some families like to be a bit more formal and that is totally ok, other families (like mine) come in jeans, and either way is ok. If we’re in the studio, I’m not generally shooting your feet so shoes don’t really matter, but if we’re outside, shoes do matter. I’d recommend nicer shoes, not gym shoes, they don’t look great in photographs.
What about the kids???? Gosh, there are so many cute outfits for kids. I think I could shop for kids for days! I’d pick something for the kids that shows their personality a bit. Little boys look so cute in overalls or button-down shirts and little girls in cute dresses or tops. The options for the kids are really endless.
